Chapter 8 ( Monique Proverbs)
In chapter 8, Silman who is a forest ecologist takes her students to Peru. In Peru they visit Manu National Park where there are over 1,000 tree species. Kolbert talks about a pattern call “ Latitude Diversity Gradient”. She explained that this meant that there was more diversity in species at lower altitudes. I learned that trees react to temperature by moving upslope. Later in the chapter they talked about an ice age and said that the Earth’s temperature was alot cooler. During this ice age animals migrated. Kolbert compared it to modern day global warming and said that animals will have to adapt to the earth getting hotter but not all animals will be able to. One of Silman’s students wanted to see a frog named Rhinella Manu. In chapter 1 however, the fungi, Bd has wiled out most of the amphibians in Peru. In the end of the chapter Kolbert explains a formula that can be used to extinction extinction that will be caused by global warming. The formula is S=cA^z. S, is the number of species, A is the size of the area, and z is the canstant of the region. This formula is called species area relationship. A big take away from this chapter was global warming and what kind of can be put into place to protect biodiversity.
