Chapter 1 (Monique Proverbs)
In chapter 1 we are introduced to the poisonous Golden Frog of Panama. After students started studying this frog and researching it, it strted to disappear. Scientists wanted to preserve this frog by any means posible and sent them to the frog “hotel” known as El Valle Amphibian Conservatory Center(EVACC). I was a bit concerned when reading about EVACC because the scientists were taking the frogs out of its original habitat. My question was even though the tanks resembles the forest would the frogs be able to adapt the them? Nevertheless when I continued to read The scientists had found the reason for the disappearance of the frogs. They noticed that Chytrid Fungi(Bd) were killing the Golden Frogs which were disappearing. Bd was already spreading throughout Panama so the scientists couldn’t stop it. A quote in this chapter that stood out to me was “ Unfortunately we are loosing all these amphibians before we know they exist”. This stood out to me because there are many stories out there that we have many parts of the ocean that aren’t discovered yet so maybe there are other species that we don’t know about like mermaids.
