Journal Entry Two(Chapter Two) -Ziomara Aguilar
In the second chapter, Kolber shifts her attention to the idea of extinction and the history behind it. She says that in the past, extinction was a concept that not a lot of people understood. It wasn't until the 18th century when Jean Leoplad Nicolas Frederic Cuvier(a French paleontologist) had traced the origins of mastodon fossils found in Franc and Upstate New York. Upon further investigation, Cuvier concluded that the fossils had come from a large animal that no longer existed. Kolber goes on, explaining that through the discovery of fossils scientists were able to learn more and theorize more about animals from the past. This chapter applies to the theme of science as being a process. The theme connects because scientists have been able to use science as a method to understand that the world has changed due to the fact that the bones of these creatures found means that they were no longer around.
