Chapter 3 ( Monique Proverbs)
Chapter 3 was centered around natural selection and the discovery of Charles Darwin. Darwin successfully found evidence of the earth rising. He said “ some areas of the earth were gradually rising as others were gradually subsiding”. Lyell had a great influence on Darwin as Darwin said ghat most of his writings sound as if they came from Lyell’s mind. In this chapter we are introduced to the Great Auk. The Great Auk is a bird that can’t fly and it closely resembles a penguin. The Great Auk was once very abundant and populated Funk Island. The Great Auk was hunted by Europeans for its fur. Due to being hunted the auk was not very abundant anymore and later became an extinct species.. By the end of this chapter we realize that this was a human caused extinction. This is something Darwin had alluded to in his book “On the Origin Of Species”. This is related to modern day because people usually hunt animals for their skin or fur to make accessories. A big question that I had at the end of the chapter was can huntjng actually lead to extinction. My reasoning for this question is because it takes a long time for something to become extinct.
