Chapter 2 (Jalen Jones)
Chapter 2 began with how children began to learn about extinction faster than scientists in previous centuries. In particular, she points out a book named History of Animals, written by Aristotle, in which he does not discuss the idea of extinction. It wasn't until George Cuvier came along that that idea started to make an appearance in the world. In one of his lectures, he discusses the mastodon fossil that was found in Ohio and shows the similarities with those found in Russia. At first he was heavily criticized for his ideas. Eventually, people came around and saw that what he had discovered, was extremely important in understanding life on Earth before human. This relates to theme 1 of the APES because of the fact that science has changed throughout time. From discovering atoms to creating apps that allow you to capture Pokemon on the street with just the touch of a button. Society, of course, didn't accept everything at first. Overtime, people have came to their senses, and it was all for the better. Like Cuvier, scientists will continue to pass on knowledge that will lead us closer top understanding the world.
