Chapter 13 ( Monique Proverbs)

In the final chapter of the book, Kolbert goes to the Institute for Conservation Research. She learns about cells known as the “Frozen Zoo”.  In this chapter Kolbert talks about how humans should start taking action to save other species. Kolbert visits a veternarian in Hawaii named Barbara Durrant. Barbara was trying to get Kinohi to ejaculate so she could make the crow pregnant for the breeding season. What happens if this doesn’t ever work? Do they go extinct because of the lack of reproduction? After this Kolbert explains the term “ The Sixth Extinction”. It basically means that we are in a time where humans are very dominant and can cause so much environmental change that can lead other species to the point of extinction. Humans can drastically change an animals habitat without even knowing or thinking twice because they are benefiting themselves. A quote that stood out to me was “ we are in the midst of the Sixth Extinction, this time caused soley by humanity’s transformation of the ecological landscape.” Most people litter which causes pollution and humans do other harmful stuff without even noticing. How can humans change that? Not everyone walks around thinking about how they are hurting other species , they only think about themselves. If  The Sixth Extinction is not as mainstream as it should be, how will people learn to change their ways to better the environment?
