Chapter 11(Monique Proverbs)
In chapter 11 Kolbert visits the Cincinnati Zoo where she met Dr. Roth and a Sumatran rhino name Suci. The doctor tries to get Suci to ovulate ao she can become pregnant but after Roth did an ultrasound there were no eggs. Why couldn’t the rhino get pregnant? Kolbert says that the Sumatran rhino species was starting decline so in order to preserve them they were placed in a breeding program. This didn’t really worked because most of the rhinos died and weren’t being well taking care of. For example they were being fed hay but rhino don’t usually eat that. Kolbert then went to Big Bone Lick which is a park that shows extinct species. Here she learned about the megafauna extinction. All the causes from this extinction were human causes. A quote that landed with me from this chapter was “ Though it might be nice to imagine there once was a time when man lived in harmony with nature it’s not clear that he ever really did”. Humans had polluted the earth for many many years and have only used it for their positive gain. Humans have also hunted animals for a long time so they can either stay warm or just for fun. What are some ways that humans can co-exist in this era without hurting animals as much?
