Welcome to our Summer Reading Blog!

Scientists,

I really look forward to reading your journal posts. This summer you'll be reading a book called The Sixth Extinction by Elizabeth Kolbert. Here's a review of the book from Scientific American. I highly suggest you read this and comment on it before embarking on your reading: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/book-review-the-sixth-extinction/.  I also recommend revisiting this introductory video:

Remember that your assignment is to write post for each chapter that connects the text to your world and your life. See the Summer Assignment sheet for details on the format of your entries.

Any questions, you know how to find me.

Hi-five,
Mr. Callahan

  1. Response to the Prologue:

The prologue of the book provides a stark contrast between the status of mankind in the past with our survival lacking a guarantee and the current status of mankind flourishing as one of the most dominant species on the planet. However, the dominance of mankind has asserted itself beyond just guaranteed survival and has now established itself as a disturbance of the chances of survival of the other biological species residing on this planet. Kolbert's mentioning of the biosphere, the collective amount of biological entities on Earth, and how it is constantly reassembled by human activity such as deforestation and industrialization really resonated with me because of the fact that this is the first impending extinction caused by an entire species rather than an abrupt environmental change.
